Wildland Firefighters Memorial

The Wildland Firefighters Memorial
Honoring Courage, Sacrifice, and Service
Some places tell their story through quiet reflection.
Located in Ochoco Creek Park, the Wildland Firefighters Memorial honors the fourteen firefighters who lost their lives during the South Canyon Fire on July 6, 1994. Nine were members of the Prineville Interagency Hotshot Crew whose courage and sacrifice forever became part of this community’s heritage.
Dedicated in 1996 by the families of the fallen, the memorial features a bronze sculpture, individual memorial stones, and a peaceful garden where visitors can pause to remember those who gave their lives protecting others.
Today, the memorial stands not only as a tribute to the fourteen heroes, but to every wildland firefighter who continues to protect our forests, communities, and public lands.

Every community has places that remind us who we are.
This is one of them.
The Wildland Firefighters Memorial honors the fourteen firefighters who lost their lives during the South Canyon Fire on Storm King Mountain near Glenwood Springs, Colorado, on July 6, 1994.
Nine of those firefighters proudly served on the Prineville Interagency Hotshot Crew.
They were sons.
Daughters.
Friends.
Neighbors.
Dedicated professionals who answered the call to protect lives, property, and our nation’s forests.
During rapidly changing weather conditions, powerful winds caused the fire to spread with incredible speed across steep terrain, leaving little opportunity for escape. Fourteen brave firefighters made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting others.
Their loss was deeply felt here in Prineville.
Determined that their courage would never be forgotten, the families of the fallen worked together to create this memorial in Ochoco Creek Park.
