Rockhound Pathways Through Central Oregon

Some Discoveries Begin Beneath Your Feet

There is something fascinating about rockhounds. They willingly spend hours looking at the ground. Most people walk through life looking straight ahead. Rockhounds slow down. They observe. They pay attention. They understand that sometimes the greatest treasures are hiding in plain sight.

Every year, visitors travel to Prineville for the Prineville Rockhound Pow Wow. They come searching for agates, jasper, petrified wood, thundereggs, obsidian, crystals, and countless other treasures hidden throughout the landscapes of Central Oregon. The Crook County Fairgrounds serves as the gathering place. The vendors, displays, demonstrations, and field trips create excitement and anticipation for what might be discovered next. But ask longtime attendees about their favorite memories and you’ll often hear something unexpected.

The show itself is only part of the story.

The Journey Beyond The Fairgrounds

The beauty of the Prineville Rockhound Pow Wow has always been that it encourages exploration.A field trip leaves the fairgrounds and winds through the Ochoco Mountains.A scenic road reveals a view you weren’t expecting.A conversation with another collector leads to a new destination.A recommendation from a local sends you toward a favorite restaurant or small business you may have otherwise driven right past. The rocks may have brought you here. The experience keeps you exploring. That’s the pathway.

Looking Down. Looking Up.

One of the most remarkable things about Prineville is that visitors can spend an entire day searching for treasures beneath their feet and then spend the evening searching for treasures above their heads. The same community that celebrates one of the nation’s longest-running rockhound events is also home to Oregon’s first International Dark Sky Park. By day, collectors search for geological treasures that tell stories millions of years old.By night, they look toward stars whose stories began billions of years ago.Think about that for a moment.

We’re standing on a rocky planet orbiting a star while searching for beautiful rocks created by the forces that helped shape our world. Then we look upward and discover that our own planet is part of something far greater. Few places allow you to experience both in a single day.Prineville is one of them.

The Unexpected Treasures

Rockhounding teaches an important lesson. The treasure you were looking for isn’t always the treasure you find. Someone arrives searching for a rare agate and discovers a favorite hiking trail.Someone comes for a field trip and finds a local shop they can’t wait to revisit.Someone stops for supplies before heading into the Ochocos and leaves with a story they’ll share for years. Some discoveries aren’t found in the dirt. They’re found in the journey. They’re found in conversations. They’re found in communities. They’re found in places that make you feel welcome.

A Place Built For Discovery

For more than 80 years, the Prineville Rockhound Pow Wow has connected people with the landscapes, geology, and outdoor adventures that make Central Oregon special. It has introduced generations of visitors to collecting sites, mountain roads, hidden treasures, and lifelong friendships.Today, those discoveries continue through the businesses, attractions, experiences, and people who call this region home.Whether you’re searching for your first thunderegg, your next collecting adventure, a spectacular dark sky, or simply a memorable day with family and friends, you’ll find that Prineville offers far more than a destination. It offers discovery. Because the best pathways rarely end where they begin. And sometimes the greatest treasures aren’t the ones you carry home. They’re the ones that stay with you long after the journey is over.
